LOS ANGELES () – More than 200,000 supporters of LeVar Burton, who have signed a petition calling for him to become the new “Jeopardy!”, The host will see him test his role for size.
Burton is among the final group of guest hosts of the quiz show, which lost cancer with long-time host Alex Trebek last November and postponed the announcement of its successor.
Burton’s supporters took the opportunity to launch an online petition for the actor, who starred in “Star Trek: The Next Generation” and “Roots,” and hosted the “Rainbow Reading” children’s educational program.
In his career, Burton “inspired and shed the minds of several generations of idiots who love little things,” according to a petition that had 246,000 counting signatories on Wednesday.
In an e-mail, a Burton spokesman said he believed the petition and its social media interactions with fans were factors that led to the guest’s invitation.
An immediate response to a comment request from Sony Pictures Television was not provided.
TV presenters and journalists George Stephanopoulos and Robin Roberts of ABC and David Faber of CNBC and sportscaster Joe Buck are other temporary hosts who receive a weekly stint, Sony said Wednesday. Broadcast dates not announced.
