According to her, the main technology leaders in Silicon Valley need to better understand the challenges posed by China Peter Thiel, high tech corporate capitalist and businessman.
“I think seeing China in an adversarial way would be a useful start, and Silicon Valley wasn’t doing so well,” Thiel said during a conference on Tuesday at the Nixon Library in California.
Thiel told China for president Xi Jinping created an unprecedented state of mass surveillance, which he described as “omnipotent.”
“At some level, it is an extraordinary sociological political experiment without a real precedent for the 20th century,” Thiel said. “There are ways that Stalin was probably getting worse than Xi and killed more people.” But the amount of hooks you have with people is simply extraordinary. It’s like the government is at your innermost core and it’s completely out. “
The Chinese government uses advanced technology of American origin to monitor communications and travel, and recently announced plans for a cryptocurrency that will monitor current financial transactions.
Mr. Thiel said that Mr. Xi had created a version of the Chinese Communist Party on the theology of the god St. Augustine: “Completely outside you, completely inside you, and he knows everything about you.”
Thiel said the US technology industry was in some ways “structurally better” in dealing with Beijing, at least compared to Wall Street, Hollywood and US universities, which he said had been bending the knee of an authoritarian Chinese system for years. The reason: Big Tech doesn’t have a big advantage from China, except for ple, which relies on Beijing to make the popular iPhone.
“When you look at [other] Big five technology companies – Google, Facebook, Amazon, Microsoft – [they have] practically very, very small presence in China, “he said. “So they’re not natural.” [a] Prochin constituency. “
Another problem for companies in Silicon Valley is “awakened politics,” Thiel argued.
“The way they think they’re not really American companies, and it’s kind of very, very difficult for them to have any sharp anti-Chinese lead.”
For example, a year ago, Facebook faced an internal battle between pro-democracy Chinese workers from Hong Kong, who opposed Chinese compatriots who sympathized with the leadership of the Communist Party in Beijing.
“The Hong Kong staff were all in favor of the protests and freedom of speech,” Mr Thiel said. “But there were more employees on Facebook who were born in China than those who were born in Hong Kong.” And Chinese citizens actually said it was just Western arrogance and [Facebook] it should not side with Hong Kong. “
Most other Facebook employees avoided the controversy, “but the internal debate felt that people were in fact more anti-Hong Kong than pro-Hong Kong,” said Mr Thiel, a board member.
The controversy erupted this week when some Facebook employees allegedly expressed concern that the platform was being used for Chinese state propaganda about Muslims in the western province of Xinjiang.
Mr. Thiel is a billionaire libertarian and founder of PayPal and Palantir Technologies, a big data analytics software company. He was one of the first investors on Facebook.
The businessman also said he confronted Google with his work for the Chinese government and the company’s refusal to provide its technology on behalf of the US military.
Thiel said he asked Google leaders if the DeepMind artificial intelligence project was being used to run internment camps with imprisoned ethnic Uighurs in western China. He was told that the company did not know about it and did not ask the Chinese government.
Google has embraced what it called “magical thinking” – pretending to work with the Chinese government is okay and simply part of its engagement.
“It’s a combination of pious desire.” They are useful idiots; their [Communist Party] “Fifth publicist” collaborators [or] some superposition of all these things, “he said. “But I think if you’re thinking about it ideologically or in terms of human rights or something like that, I’m tempted to say it’s just deeply racist.” It’s like saying that because they look different, they’re not white, they don’t have the same rights. It’s something very bad, but I don’t know how to unlock it. “
CARRIER IN THE SOUTH CHINESE SEA
A strike group of aircraft carriers led by the USS Theodor Roosevelt is conducting operations in the South China Sea this week amid growing tensions between Beijing and a US ally in the Philippines.
China has amassed more than 200 naval vessels near the attacked reef requested by Manila in the Spratly Islands, which led the Philippine Air Force to send daily patrols of warplanes over the reef.
The navy said on Wednesday that the Roosevelt strike group had conducted joint operations with the Malaysian navy – as part of an intensified US effort to strengthen the alliance in the region to counter Chinese military action.
China built about 3,200 acres of islands in the sea, and in 2018 began deploying anti-ship and anti-aircraft missiles at some of the new man-made bases.
The Navy said the carrier allied with the Royal Malaysian Air Force during the first bilateral military exercises between the armies.
“While we would like to meet face to face, I am excited to be able to meet in the air to help deepen security cooperation between our two nations,” said Rear Adm. Doug Most, Commander of Carrier Strike Group 9. “Our continued commitment to interoperability is essential to maintaining peace and security in the Indo-Pacific region.”
The exercises included aerial combat training, which would be useful in any conflict with China. The carrier’s operations began on Sunday and, according to a Navy statement, included simulated raids.
The deployment of a warship together with a cruiser and a missile destroyer is the second time this year that the strike group sailed in the sea.
“During the deployment of the strike group, we have demonstrated our commitment to a rules-based order in the Indo-Pacific region by working with our friends from Australia, India, John, Malaysia and South Korea,” said Admiral Verissimo.
In addition to practicing naval strikes, the strike group also conducts anti-submarine operations.
According to the Chinese state media, meanwhile, China operates its own transportation operations further north around Taiwan.
The Liaoning carrier sailed east from Taiwan on Monday as US officials said they were provocative military operations aimed at strengthening island democracy.
The Global Times, affiliated with the Communist Party, said that operations with carriers had shown that the Chinese military was surrounded by an island, isolating its troops and “leaving them nowhere to flee.”
On Wednesday, the Navy faced carrier operations by sending a destroyer of the USS John S. McCain through the strained Taiwan Strait, near where Chinese warplanes daily raided the Taiwan air defense zone.
Navy Lieutenant Mark Langford, a spokesman for the 7th Fleet, said McCain had crossed the Strait “in accordance with international law.”
“The transit of the ship across the Taiwan Strait demonstrates the US commitment to a free and open Indo-Pacific space,” he said. “The United States military will continue to fly, sail and operate where international law allows.”
According to the Taiwanese Ministry of Defense, Chinese warplanes have flown into the southern air defense zone almost every day for the past month. The last flights included eight J-10 fighters, four J-16 fighters, two KJ-500 airborne warning and control aircraft and a Y-8 anti-submarine fighter.
All flights took place near the southwestern part of the island, and the Y-8 flew halfway around Taiwan before returning to the mainland.
PUTIN’S HYPERSONIC MISSILE
Russian president Vladimir Putin recently revealed the secret of one of Moscow’s lauded superthreats: a new hypersonic missile called the Avangard.
The rocket travels so fast near the edge of the atmosphere that its warhead temperature reaches 3,632 degrees Fahrenheit while remaining under controlled flight, Mr. Putin revealed.
“The temperature on the surface of the Sun is about 6,000 degrees.” [Celsius]. And the tip temperature of our latest Avangard missile system is almost 2,000 [degrees Celsius]. Now I’m talking about materials science. The rocket flies and melts in flight like ice cream. And yet he still takes orders and remains controllable, “said the Russian leader on March 26, according to the Interfax state administration.
The flight test of the American hypersonic missile amplifier on Monday failed in what the service stated as an obstacle to the program. The Pentagon is ridiculously building hypersonic missiles as part of an effort to catch up with similar programs in China and Russia.
In December, the Russian Ministry of Defense announced that the first Avangard missile regiment would be put into combat service near Orenburg. The strategic weon is a hypersonic gliding vehicle armed with nuclear weapons, which, according to Russian officials, is reinforced near space by a ballistic missile and is a cable reaching the speed of Mach 27.
The glider will be deployed on SS-18 missiles and eventually on the upcoming heavy ICBM SS-X-29, which Moscow calls Sarmat.
The Russian military considers Avangard a reaction to the deployment of US missile defenses.
