February 27 – A 41-year-old man from Santa Maria is arrested on suspicion of DUI after a brief altercation with Santa Maria police at the intersection of South Broadway and Stowell Road.
The incident was reported by the Santa Maria police mission at 4 pm. Immediately after 30, when he saw 41-year-old Daniel Casteneda, who was driving his green Honda sedan irregularly, reports Sgt. Paul Flores, who added that a short chase started before the car was stopped at the intersection.
Several Santa Maria police units responded, including a BeatCat armored vehicle used by the SWAT team, which temporarily blocked the intersection.
Some passers-by gathered at the south-west corner of the intersection to watch the situation unfold. The CoastHills Credit Union near the intersection remained closed after being taken to Casteneda, according to 56-year-old Don Marshall, who said he unknowingly went through the aftermath.
Santa Maria police fired their weapons at Casteneda before the peaceful end of the conflict, and he was arrested shortly after 5 p.m.
According to Flores, the incident is being investigated.
