House spokeswoman Nancy Pelosi beat up the Republican leadership on Thursday for beating Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene, R-Ga., Seat on the Education Committee, despite the newly-formed Congressman’s apparent belief in baseless conspiracy theories about the school shootings in Newtown, Connecticut, and Parkland, Florida.
“What worries me is the Republican leadership in the House of Representatives who were willing to overlook and ignore these statements,” Pelosi said during her weekly Capitol Hill press conference when asked about Greene’s rhetoric.
“Assign her to the Education Committee if she made fun of killing young children at Sandy Hook Elementary School, if she made fun of killing teenagers at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School – what would you think? Or is “thinking” too generous a word for what they might do? It is absolutely horrific. “
Pelosi said the “focus” should be on GOP leaders and that Greene’s presence on the education committee demonstrated “disregard for the death of these children”.
“It really is beyond the pale,” said the house spokesman.
CNN earlier this week released Old Facebook posts showing Greene had shown support for the execution of prominent Democrats, including Pelosi, before running for Congress in 2020. In a post dated January 2019, Greene liked a comment that said a “bullet to the head” would be quicker to remove the house speaker.
Posts on Greene’s Facebook account also expressed her support for unsubstantiated conspiracy theories about the Newtown and Parkland shootings. “I agree!” She wrote in response to a post in which she said the Parkland massacre was a “planned false flag shootout”. She agreed to another post, claiming that the Newtown shooting, which killed 20 children, was staged.
Greene, who has historically supported the QAnon conspiracy theory and has long made racist comments, was elected to the House of Representatives in November after winning the GOP primary in a heavily Republican district.
“These comments are deeply troubling,” said a spokesman for the House minority leader Kevin McCarthy on Tuesday, “and Leader McCarthy plans to speak to the Congressman about it.”
In a statement posted on Twitter, Greene said she’s had teams of people manage their social media accounts over the years, implying that some of the comments and likes weren’t hers.
On Wednesday morning, Fred Guttenberg, the father of a Parkland student who died in the 2018 shootings there, posted a video Parkland survivors harassed by Greene and gun lawmakers endorses David Hogg outside the Capitol.
Rep. Jimmy Gomez, D-Calif., Announced on Wednesday evening that he intended to pass a resolution to oust Greene from Congress for her social media posts in support of violence against Democrats.
The resolution will almost certainly fail, as a two-thirds majority is required to expel a member from the House in which the Democrats have a wafer-thin majority.
Pelosi also told reporters that she plans to meet with retired General Russel L. Honoré to conduct a security clearance of the Capitol complex following the deadly January 6 riot.
The House Democrats have openly expressed concern about their safety after the siege. The Department of Homeland Security issued a bulletin Wednesday warning of ongoing domestic violence threats to lawmakers even if they return to their home districts.
Pelosi reiterated her belief that an additional review would be needed to assess whether some GOP members pose a threat to their democratic counterparts when “the enemy is inside”.
