TALLAHASSEE, Florida. – A Florida lawmaker is preparing legislation that would force state and local governments to boycott Twitter, Facebook, Apple, Android and Amazon in response to President Donald Trump’s ban on social media.
Republican Republican Randy Fine announced his plans in a letter to Republican Governor Ron DeSantis and an independently elected cabinet, in which he also asked them to get rid of state investment in companies. Ironically, he posted his letter on Twitter and Facebook.
“If these companies silence the president of the United States, anyone can do it,” Fine wrote. “It is clear that Twitter and Facebook are dealing with unilateral discrimination against the Conservative view.”
He said the bill would prevent government money from being spent on advertising, services, or any product or device manufactured or sold by companies.
In addition, Republican Sen. Danny Burgess has filed a bill requiring social media companies to notify account holders within 30 days of account deactivation or suspension, explaining why action was taken.
Lawmakers begin their annual 60-day session on March 2.
