White House attorney Pat Cipolone said: “The president did absolutely nothing wrong.”
President Trump’s defense will last three days and will follow the Democrats’ case, which ended on January 24.
Donald Trump faces two charges related to his deals with Ukraine.
Impeachment articles accuse the president of abuse of power and obstruction of Congress.
President Trump is said to have withheld military aid to put pressure on Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky to launch a corruption investigation against Donald Trump’s political rival, Democrat Joe Biden and his son Hunter.
Democrats also accuse President Trump of visiting Vladimir Zelensky in the White House contingent to investigate.
The president has been accused of obstructing Congress by failing to cooperate with the House of Representatives’ impeachment investigation.
He denies the allegations as a witch hunt.

The Senate trial will decide whether Donald Trump should be removed from office. This is unlikely because Republicans control the Senate and any such move will require a two-thirds majority.
Echoing a remark heard by many Republicans, Pat Cipolone said Democrats “want you not only to undo the results of the last election … they are asking you to remove President Trump from the ballot of elections in about nine months.”
“They are asking you to do something very, very follow-up and, I would obey you … very, very dangerous,” he said.
Much of the abuse of power has focused on a July July phone call between President Trump and President Greenxi.
Donald Trump’s defender Mike Purpura insisted there was no quid pro quo – as Democrats say.
He said: “The Greens did not feel pressure. President Zelenski says he has not felt any pressure. Home managers tell you they know better. “
At a press conference after the January 25 hearing, Adam Schiff, the Democrats’ chief prosecutor, raised the controversial issue of calling witnesses.
He said: “The only question they didn’t address at all is why they don’t want a fair trial against the American people, why they want this to be the first impeachment case in history without a single witness and without a single document being handed over.
“That should tell you everything you need to know about the strengths and weaknesses of this case.”
Senate Democratic leader Chuck Schumer told reporters that President Trump’s defense team inadvertently “made really convincing arguments as to why the Senate should call witnesses and documents.”
