President Donald Trump arrived in the Vietnamese capital Hanoi ahead of a second summit with North Korean leader Kim Jong Un.
Air Force One landed at Noi Bai Airport hours after Kim Jong Un reached Hanoi by train and car.
The summit, scheduled for February 27-28, followed the historic first round of talks in Singapore in 2018.
Donald Trump and Kim Jong Un are expected to discuss progress in disposing of the Korean Peninsula from nuclear weapons.
Ceremonial guards sent a red carpet laid out for Kim Jong Un when he arrived at the Dong Dang border station on February 26th. He was then taken to Hanoi, where he was awaited by crowds of security and raised flags.
Kim Jong Un is believed to be traveling with his sister Kim Yoon-jung and one of the main negotiators, former General Kim Yong-chol, both acquaintances from a previous summit with President Trump.
The journey from Pyongyang to Hanoi took more than two days and took about 2,500 miles.
When Kim Jong Un’s train passed through China, the roads were closed and the train stations stopped. Chinese social networks lack blocked roads, congestion and train delays.
Vietnam’s Dong Dang station was also closed for visits on the eve of his arrival.
Now Kim Jong Un is traveling by car about 100 miles to Hanoi.
The ruler of North Korea decided to take the train, because thus traveled his grandfather Kim Il Sung, who was going to Vietnam and Eastern Europe.
Kim Jong Un’s private green-and-yellow train has 21 bulletproof carriages and is luxurious, with plush pink leather sofas and conference rooms, so the trip wouldn’t be inconvenient.
Air Force One left Andrews Air Force Base in Maryland, landing in Hanoi on Tuesday night local time.
The details of their schedule are becoming clear only now. President Trump will meet with Kim Jong Un for a brief one-on-one conversation on Feb. 27, and then they will have lunch with their advisers, White House spokeswoman Sarah Sanders said. On February 28, executives will meet at a series of meetings back and forth.
The meeting in Hanoi is expected to build on what was achieved at the summit in Singapore in June 2018.
Trump-Kim Summit: Donald Trump Praises Historic Talks With North Korean Leader Trump-Kim Summit Held at Capella Hotel on Sentosa Island in Singapore
The first summit led to a vague agreement, with both leaders agreeing to work towards denuclearization – although it was not clear what this would entail.
However, little diplomatic progress has been made since that meeting.
This time, both leaders will be very aware that a high level of expectation of the outcome is expected, which demonstrates tangible signs of progress.
However, President Trump apparently guided expectations before the summit, saying he was “in no hurry” to seek the denuclearization of North Korea.
He said: “I don’t want anyone to rush. I just don’t want testing. So far there are no tests, we are happy. ”
Vietnam is chosen for many reasons. It has diplomatic relations with both the U.S. and North Korea, despite once being enemies with the U.S., and could be used by the U.S. as an example of two countries working together and undoing their past grievances.
Ideologically, both Vietnam and North Korea are communist countries, although since then Vietnam has developed rapidly and become one of Asia’s fastest-growing economies, and yet the party there retains absolute power.
