Officials say suspected explosive devices have been sent to top Democrats, including former President Barack Obama and former Secretary Hillary Clinton, as well as CNN.
The devices are believed to be tube bombs.
Law enforcement officials told the media that the device, discovered on CNN on October 24, looked similar to the one found at George Soros’ home in Bedford on October 22.
CNN’s New York office was evacuated after an alleged bomb was sent to their post office.
President Donald Trump has said these threats “have no place in America.”
Speaking at the White House, President Trump said he had been informed by the FBI and “a major federal investigation is now underway.”
He said: “The safety of the American people is my highest and absolute priority.
“In these times, we just have to unite. We need to come together and send a very clear, unequivocal message that threats or acts of political violence of any kind have no place in America. “
New York Mayor Bill de Blasio described the attempted attacks as “an act of terror trying to undermine our free press and the country’s leaders.”
“To all government officials, to all party affiliations – do not encourage violence, do not encourage hatred, do not encourage attacks on the media, you may disagree, but you must show respect.”
George Soros: An explosive device found at the billionaire’s residence in Bedford
The FBI in New York said it was aware of the suspected packages and that their joint terrorism group was supporting the investigation.
The packages were addressed to Barack Obama, Hillary Clinton and former CIA Director John Brennan.
Additional suspicious packages addressed to Democrat Maxine Waters and former Attorney General Eric Holder are currently being investigated by law enforcement.
The packages for Barack Obama and Hillary Clinton were to arrive at their residences.
FBI Special Agent Brian Paarman told reporters that the device for John Brennan, which appears to have been live, was sent to CNN’s post office.
One of the packages sent identified Congresswoman Debbie Wasserman Schultz, a former DNC chairwoman, as the sender.
The package, destined for Eric Holder, was reportedly sent to the wrong address and returned to the congresswoman’s office in Sunrise, Florida.
A Secret Service statement said the package, addressed to Hillary Clinton, was reinstated late on October 23.
“Early this morning, October 24, 2018, a second package addressed to the residence of former President Barack Obama was intercepted by secret service personnel in Washington, DC.” is added to the statement.
“Both packages were intercepted before being delivered to their intended location. Defendants did not receive the packages, nor were they at risk of receiving them. “
These attempted attacks came two days after a confirmed pipe bomb was found in a mailbox at the home of George Soros, who was criticized by right-wing groups for supporting liberal causes.
