The YouTube app is missing in the next version of Apple’s iOS6 operating system.
Apple said the app was removed because its license to create the program expired.
Apple’s version of the YouTube app has been a staple of iOS on the iPhone since the device was first released in 2007.
Apple said that Google is developing its own version of the application, which should appear soon.
The fourth test or beta version of iOS6 was released by Apple on August 6. The final public version is expected to be ready in September before rumors of a new iPhone.
Soon after the release of the software, many technical news sites noticed that the YouTube application was missing, although the version of this program created by Apple has been available for years.
Not all of YouTube’s features have disappeared from iOS6 beta, Apple said in a statement, as users can still play videos by visiting YouTube with a web browser. They can still upload movies to YouTube from a phone or tablet.
The financial terms of the license deal, which allowed Apple to create the YouTube app, have not been disclosed.
Apple will not count on replacing the YouTube app with another pre-installed video sharing service. It has already taken a similar step with Google maps, as iOS6 will use its own mapping application.
There is no date when Google’s version of the YouTube app will appear.
“It’s all about Apple completely removing Google from its operating system.” said Stuart Miles, founder and head of the technology news site Pocket-lint. He wondered if the end result of this strategy would be for Apple to turn down Google as the default search engine on iOS.
“In a few years, you’ll just ask Siri for results and you won’t care where that comes from.” he said.
Gaining control of the YouTube app is good for Google, he said, because it allows him to update and change the program as needed. This would also mean that the ads will appear in videos.
“There’s no reason not to start running ads before they run, which will mean a worse experience for users.”
